- TAKEN FROM THE COMPUTER TRADE WEEKLY
-
- DATED MONDAY JANUARY 30th 1995
-
- CAR BOOT PC CHEAT CAUGHT.
-
- A car boot trader dealing in pirated software was imprisoned last week.
-
- The conviction followed a major ELSPA investigation, Which has targeted
- car boot sellers as 'enemy number 1' in the battle against counterfeit
- games.
- Darren Hewitt of Colchester was charged with eight offences of selling
- copies of PC games at Ardleigh Car Boot Fair. The court heard that,
- following a tip-off from a member of the public, an ELSPA investigator
- also visited Hewitt's home and bought eight Titles by Electronic Art
- and US Gold.
- As the money changed hands, police entered the house with a search
- warrant and confiscated all of Hewitts equipment and software.
- The court also learned that Hewitt had been caught by ELSPA's John
- Loader a year earlier at another car boot sale, where the local trading
- standards officer charged him with similar offences.
- On that occasion he was fined £ 130.00 on each of two Copyright charges.
- Hewitt was sentenced to Six Month's Imprisonment.
